The Project

In June 2022, I was asked to join the art department for the paramilitary Christmas epic, Red One. The Production Design was by Bill Brzeski, with Supervising Art Direction by Doug Meerdink.  I would be tasked with vehicle and console designs for some of the key elements of the film.  With principal photography to begin on October 2022, in Atlanta, GA, it would take a huge effort to get the design approvals required to get everything delivered on time.

The Hyperbaric Chamber

This chamber was used in the film during the kidnapping scene.  I really enjoyed working within the framework of a 19th century, wrought iron aesthetic with brass detailing.  It reminded me a lot of my great-great grandmother's antique Singer sewing machine that I used to play on as a child.

INT Mission Control

This is a series of consoles I designed for the North Pole's Mission Control Center.  The Set Decorator was Danielle Berman.  Her team sent boxes and boxes of vintage buttons, switches, and levers to my studio to give me a sense of the world that these would live in and allow me to integrate them into the final design.

Let's Get Technical

Shown below are the finished design drawings for the INT Mission Control consoles that would ultimately be sent to fabrication.  I was very pleased with the final result.

MEA Prop Design

Early on, I was asked by Property Master Andy Siegel, to design a series of props that had a "science fiction" functionality, but with a vintage, post-war look and feel.  I really enjoyed working with this talented prop team.  Getting to live in the vintage world of handguns and flashlights from the early 1950's was very satisfying.

Process

Below are some comp boards I put together for our various design groupings.  You can really see  the form language beginning to emerge.  Conceptualization and the exploration of different ideas  is my favorite part of the process.  The final result was a family of hand props that helped tell the story of the characters and the agency that they belonged to.
